Style Guide: Knitwear

While Su Misura Bespoke doesn’t make knitwear, we absolutely love paring it with our bespoke garments. We think it’s a classic way to dress down your tailored garments for more casual, or colder, affairs. Here are a few tips on how to style tailoring and knitwear together.

The turtleneck

If you have ever visited the Su Misura showroom in Edmonton, you may have seen one of our favorite display looks: a dark grey checked suit paired with a dark green cashmere turtleneck. Now, the suit itself is a classic look with slightly wider notch lapels. A crucial point of interest in this look for us is the green turtleneck underneath. Not only is the turtleneck currently very trendy, but it also offers great contrast to the grey tones of the suit. Furthermore, it ads versatility to the suit. A cashmere piece under a classic two-piece suit allows for more warmth, which come Canadian fall, is much needed. We absolutely love this look and wearing just the turtleneck with tailored pants will be a great work-wear look with a more casual feel.

The fisherman sweater

We’ve featured this look on our Instagram on multiple occasions and with good reason. There is nothing not to love about this look. The suit itself is a light beige/grey with white pinstripes paired with a cream fisherman sweater distinguished by its rope-like pattern. The lighter color knitwear you choose in the fisherman style the more pairing options you will have. This sweater is layered over a crisp white dress shirt for extra warmth and personal flair, but wearing this piece of knitwear on its own under a camel, flannel suit, a black mohair suit, or even with navy blue dress pants on their own, would be a great way to contrast the soft easiness of this type of knitwear with the sharpness of classic tailoring.

The monochromatic

The final look is this monochromatic grey look. The slight pattern in the mid-grey suit is very subtle and almost unnoticeable. But yet, this look makes a bold statement. While you wouldn’t think that grey on grey on grey could accomplish this, this grey look is a showstopper. There are two tricks to achieving this kind of look. Firstly, make sure that the lines are clean. Of course your tailored garments will be well-structured and perfectly fitted, but more importantly, to avoid making this look too grey having similar tones of grey (either blue or green undertones) but with slight difference in lightness will make the lines of the suit contrast against the color of the knitwear. Secondly, the main point of interest here should be the duelling textures. Avoid going with a flannel suit and a fluffy piece of knitwear. Instead, choose a smooth wool suit and a slightly warmer and softer piece of knitwear (the fisherman from earlier would also be a great fit for this) to ad interesting textures to catch the eye of others.

The best piece of advice we can give for mixing knitwear with tailoring is to have fun and use what you have. If you have a favourite cream sweater then consider what other colors and textures your suits are and how the different textures might contrast or compliment each other nicely.
