Where to start when getting a bespoke suit

So you have decided that you want to have a bespoke suit made. Great decision! But where do you even begin?

Step 1: Know what you like (and what you don't)

When new clients come to us, we also suggest browsing magazines, Instagram, Pinterest, or the sites of brands you like. If you see something you like, we can most likely custom make something similar for you. Coming in with an idea of what you're looking for or with some sort of inspiration in mind is tremendously helpful. If everything is overwhelming (which it absolutely can be), then maybe start with getting a sense of what you don't like. Are you a lover of color or not? Not feeling a waistcoat? Or suspenders? If completely lost, start with ruling out specific style choices.

Step 2: Cloth, cloth, cloth

You want your bespoke suit to feel luxurious. However, when picking a cloth for your custom garment, there is a lot more to consider. First of all, is this an all-year suit or a seasonal suit? All of our fabrics are from English or Italien mills and the vast majority of them are made from wool. Wool is a natural fiber and a wonderful choice for an all-year-around suit, as wool is breathable in the summertime but locks in your body heat in the colder months. But if you're looking for a suit specifically for a summer wedding, then you might want to consider linen or bamboo. Luckily that's something the team at Su Misura Bespoke is more than happy to help with!

Step 3: Colors, patterns, and textures

If you thought we were done talking about cloth, then think again! The cloth is about more than the feeling of the suit, it is first and foremost about the look. Do you want your suit to make a statement with a bold plaid? Do you want a vibrant colorful suit? Or, are you looking for something you can wear every day? Bespoke suits can be anything from bold pink and turquoise to a classic black dinner jacket. This step goes back to knowing what you want and what role your bespoke suit is going to play in your wardrobe.

Step 4: All about the fit

This step is, in our opinion, the most important. This is where you get to see craftsmanship, and you can tell made to measure or off the rack apart from the work of a bespoke tailor. Every part of the suit should fit you perfectly. There should be no pulling anywhere, no strange bunching of fabric. You should never feel restricted in your movements. The length of the pants should always work with your leg shape and length and hit the top of your ankle or shoe at an appropriate place.. A suit can either enhance your best or your worst features depending on the fit of the garment. A bespoke clothier will know how to make a suit that will make you look good, always.

Getting a custom made suit can be a huge investment of money and time. However, if you know what you're looking for and what function you need the garment to fill in your wardrobe, an expert team of bespoke tailors will be able to help you get on the right path to the perfect bespoke suit.
